Amtrak adds additional Chicago and West Michigan departures for Labor Day Weekend

 Amtrak press release

CHICAGO – Why labor through traffic and tolls during Labor Day Weekend when Amtrak is adding service between Chicago and Western Michigan? An early morning westbound train from Kalamazoo gets you to the Lake Michigan beaches or to Chicago in time to get breakfast and “Enjoy Illinois,” while a late evening eastbound train to Kalamazoo is “Pure Michigan,” to quote from each state’s tourism agency.

From September 2-6, five eastbound Amtrak trains will depart Chicago once in the morning, twice in the afternoon and twice in the evening, making stops in New Buffalo, Niles and Kalamazoo. From September 3-7, five westbound Amtrak trains will depart Kalamazoo three times in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. Some of these trains will also serve Hammond-Whiting and Michigan City, Ind., along with Dowagiac, Mich. See the attached schedules for details.

One way adult tickets between Chicago and Kalamazoo start at $21. Up to two children ages 2-15 per adult can ride for half-fare.

The Amtrak Wolverine Service trains have been selling out — even after adding additional coach and business class seats on the Chicago-Kalamazoo-Detroit/Pontiac corridor on weekends this year. For the period October 2009 through July 2010, more than 390,000 passengers rode the route, up nearly six percent from the previous year, with July 2010 ridership up nearly 23 percent from July 2009. This route in Western Michigan is shared with the Amtrak Blue Water to and from East Lansing and Port Huron, which is up 15 percent for the year, 50 percent in July.

This experiment is another example of Amtrak responding to market demands and adding service. Earlier this summer, Amtrak operated extra trains during Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

FRA Receives 77 Applications for High-Speed Passenger Rail Funding Totaling $8.5 Billion

From a Federal Railroad Administration press release:

In an overwhelming show of support for the Administration’s high-speed rail initiative, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood today announced that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has received 77 applications from 25 states for the most recent round of High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) grant funding. Application requests total more than $8.5 billion and will be considered for funding from more than $2.3 billion appropriated in FY 2010.

This is in addition to the $8 billion appropriated in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) as a down payment for the HSIPR program.

“The response to our call to transform America’s transportation landscape has been tremendous and shows the country is ready for high-speed rail,” Secretary LaHood said. “We have received strong bi-partisan support for President Obama’s bold initiative that will enhance regional mobility, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, ease highway and airport congestion and reduce our carbon footprint.”

FRA received 20 applications from 10 states totaling $7.8 billion for high-speed rail corridor development programs. FRA also received 57 applications from 18 states totaling $700 million for smaller, individual projects within rail corridors that are ready to begin construction. While not all proposed projects can be funded, the Department will evaluate the applications to identify the projects that will deliver the greatest public benefits and give American taxpayers the highest return on their investment.

“These historic investments will allow states to take the next step in making their high-speed intercity passenger rail development plans a reality,” said FRA Administrator Joseph C. Szabo. “The states and FRA have been working hard to establish a solid foundation for a long-term program that will reshape our transportation system.”

Total funding to date for the HSIPR program comes from several sources:

  • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: $8 billion.
  • FY2009 appropriations and remaining funds from a related FY 2008 appropriations funded program: $95 million.
  • FY2010 appropriations: $2.125 billion (HSIPR service development projects), $245 million (HSIPR individual projects), and $50 million (HSIPR planning and multi-state proposal activities).

Grant selections for the $2.345 billion in FY2010 appropriations are intended to help states further develop their corridor plans. From this amount, $245 million has been reserved for individual projects within a corridor that is ready to begin construction. Recipients of this funding will be announced in the fall of 2010.

To date, FRA has awarded more than $583 million to states for HSIPR.

Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman’s contract extended through 2013

Amtrak Press Release

WASHINGTON – At the July 29 Amtrak board of directors meeting, the board voted unanimously to extend the contract of current President and CEO Joseph Boardman through 2013. Amtrak board chairman Tom Carper made the following statement:

“I am extremely pleased that the Amtrak board of directors has unanimously agreed to retain President and CEO Joe Boardman through 2013. Since he was tapped for the job in November of 2008, Joe has been a strong and visible leader dedicated to providing Amtrak the vision and stability needed to guide the railroad into this new era of passenger rail.

“Joe’s focus on a safer, greener and healthier Amtrak will enhance safety, improve the reliability of our services, reduce trip times and increase speeds, yield targeted and effective infrastructure investments, and ensure the delivery of quality customer service. And as we near the end of the fiscal year, it appears Amtrak will rival our all-time high ridership and ticket revenue record.

“Joe is also strengthening our relationships with state, commuter and other partners to add frequencies to current routes and develop service in new markets. In addition, he is setting the stage for Amtrak to be a competitive force as we expand our role in new markets as America’s only high-speed rail operator.

“He is an active part of the Amtrak family and is committed to building and strengthening relationships, from states to labor organizations.

“On behalf of the entire board, I thank Joe for his commitment and service to Amtrak and look forward to working with him in the coming years.”

WHERE: 51000 Woodward Ave., southbound
Pontiac

BACKGROUND: Pontiac’s central location is an important asset to the community. It is at a transportation crossroads, serving passenger rail, intercity bus and local transit customers, with easy access to I-75 and M-59, and Oakland County International Airport. SMART, which serves local transit passengers in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, stops within sight of the facility on Woodward Avenue.

The previous transportation center was demolished in 2008. The new energy-efficient, fully accessible facility will be built with 100 percent state funds.

During construction, tickets must be purchased online from Amtrak or Greyhound, or from a kiosk or agent in another facility. When the new facility opens, a Greyhound ticketing agent will assist bus passengers.

Greyhound has eight daily schedules that go through Pontiac. The top five destinations of travelers from Pontiac are Chicago, Indianapolis, Saginaw, Lansing and New York. Greyhound has 160 locations throughout the state of Michigan.

As the nation’s intercity passenger rail operator, Amtrak connects America in safer, greener and healthier ways. Amtrak also is the partner of choice for state-supported corridor services in 15 states, including Michigan. Amtrak has three routes in Michigan, including the Blue Water to East Lansing and Port Huron, the Pere Marquette to St. Joseph and Grand Rapids and the Wolverine to Detroit and Pontiac. Ridership on Amtrak services in Michigan is up over last year, with more than 300,000 passengers on the Wolverine so far this year.

MDOT asks rural communities to comment on draft State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP)

Michigan Department of Transportation Press Release

June 23, 2010The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is holding a series of 10 meetings to encourage public comment on future road and bridge projects in rural areas of Michigan. MDOT has scheduled meetings from Escanaba to Adrian from July 13 to July 22 regarding MDOT’s reduced draft State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The meetings will provide residents of rural communities with an opportunity to discuss a preliminary list of projects for the 2011-2014 fiscal years with local MDOT planners and engineers. A list of the projects is available online at www.michigan.gov/stip.

MDOT is working with state and local transportation agencies to advance a reduced STIP. Faced with a shortfall in state gas tax and vehicle registration revenues used to match available federal funding in 2011, MDOT is submitting two programs for review. MDOT is currently proposing a constrained $600 million-a-year program. Should $84 million in state revenues become available to match federal aid, this program would expand to a $1.25 billion per year. MDOT has released a list of reduced programs and a list of additional projects that the state will pursue if funding becomes available. Both lists have been posted to the STIP page on the MDOT Web site.

“The transportation funding crisis affects every area of the state in communities large and small. This particular series of meetings is designed to ensure that the voices of citizens in non-metropolitan areas are heard, so we encourage interested residents to participate,” said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle.
