MARP meets in Sanford on June 22

On Saturday, June 22, MARP members will gather at the Sanford Centennial Museum in the village of Sanford, off U.S. Hwy 10 about nine miles northwest of Midland.

The Sanford Centennial Museum houses an extensive local history collection. There are nine historic buildings, including two schools, a general store, log cabin, township hall, church, train depot and train, all authentically restored and furnished. Inside the buildings, collections include vintage tools, implements from the logging days, political memorabilia, a dentist’s office, a saloon, toys, household goods, and much more. The Museum Complex Map  gives a good idea of the richness of the site.

MARP will meet in the Depot building, one of the buildings that comprises The Museum complex. The meeting will be your opportunity to engage in brainstorming to help determine MARP’s role in advancing rail projects in Michigan and actions that we might undertake to improve passenger services.

Located on the Tittabawassee River one mile off U.S. Hwy 10, near Sanford Lake and its beaches, and across from the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, Sanford offers enticements to making this an early season weekend getaway.

Learn about 30-year transportation plan at MARP’s April meeting

 The April 6 MARP membership meeting will be a unique opportunity to make our voices heard as Michigan embarks on a 2-year transportation planning process dubbed Michigan Mobility 2045. The Michigan State Long Range Transportation Plan (SLRTP) that will result from the MM2045 process will establish priorities to guide development of the state’s transportation network over the next three decades. This is best time for us to let MDOT know what mobility means to us: more trains and transit as part of an interconnected network that includes all modes and is accessible to all regardless of age, physical ability, or income level.

Our featured speaker will be Brad Sharlow, the project manager for Michigan Mobility 2045. He will explain the process and goals of a new approach that will roll planning for all movement of people and goods into a single document. The resulting plan, as envisioned by MDOT, “will be a multi-modal effort that integrates all transportation modes, operators, and users.” Sharlow’s presentation will allow ample time for Q & A as well as brainstorming that will be recorded to become part of the official record of public and stakeholder input.

MARP meets in St. Johns on Jan. 26, 2019

MARP’s first meeting of 2019 will be held on Saturday, January 26, 10:00 AM to Noon, at the former Grand Trunk Depot, 107 E. Railroad Street, St. Johns MI 48879. Our presenter will be Nick Little, Director of the Railway Research and Education program at Michigan State University. He will explore with us the future of passenger rail in Michigan and across the country.  Mr. Little has a wealth of railroading experience, having started his career with British Railways.

We will also have a tour of the depot and the vintage rail cars being restored by volunteers led by Jenny and Gary McCampbell. Their most ambitious project has been the restoration of the “Sault St. Marie”, a 1902 Smith & Barney Sleeper car that probably ran between the Soo and Duluth until service ceased in 1936. Other invited speakers will provide updates on developments in the state of Michigan and the Midwest. Officers will be elected for the 2018-2020 term.

The cost to attend is $25 per person and includes a catered luncheon. The registration deadline is Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018.

MARP Meeting at MSU Detroit Center is on Saturday, April 21, 2018

MARP is inviting students, in particular, and the public, in general, to join us in a discussion of public transportation issues in SE Michigan. Leading our discussion will be two of Detroit’s leading advocates for transportation choice and equity. Megan Owens is the Executive Director of Transportation Riders United, otherwise known as TRU, which has been at the forefront of efforts to make true regional transportation a reality. Joel Batterman is Coordinator for Motor City Freedom Riders, an organization founded on the belief that transportation is freedom and that freedom of mobility for all can be won through the power of grassroots community organizing.

The discussion is timely, given the recent announcement of a revised regional transportation plan that may be put before the voters in November. Prominent features of the proposal are commuter rail service between Detroit and Ann Arbor, the addition of fifteen high-frequency regional routes, fifteen express routes for commuter and airport service, and infrastructure improvements along five premium routes to increase reliability. We encourage all our members in the Metro Detroit area to make a special effort to be with us for this important discussion. And we challenge each of you to bring a friend with you. Following the meeting, we will hop on the QLINE streetcar to see what’s happening along Woodward Ave.

Free parking is available in the secure MSU lot on the corner of Cass and Stimson, one block west of the MSU Detroit Center. Free and metered street parking is also available on side streets surrounding the facility.
