40th Anniversary Celebration

Amtrak will kick off a year-long celebration honoring its 40th year in operation beginning May 1, 2011. As part of the celebration, the railroad is renovating and repainting locomotives and equipment to honor the event. On, Jan. 30, 2011, Amtrak P42DC locomotive No. 145 debut its new heritage paint scheme to honor the celebration, wearing the paint scheme applied to the passenger railroad's locomotives in the 1980's. Above, Amtrak No. 145 leads train 30, the Capitol Limited, at Elkhart, Ind., Jan. 30. The locomotive would then go on to lead other Amtrak trains across the country to promote the event. Amtrak train 371, the Pere Marquette, arrives to the Tulip City of Holland, Michigan, Oct. 16, 2010, passing along the fall colors on CSX’s Grand Rapids Subdivision. Amtrak locomotive No. 832, a General Electric P40DC leading the train, was rehabilitated by the passenger railroad using a U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant.

Michigan Northern Arrow in Manton

Residents of Manton greet the arrival of the Michigan Northern Arrow excursion to the 86th annual Manton Area Harvest Festival, Sept. 6. The excursion, sponsored by the Blue Water Michigan Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and operating on the Great Lakes Central Railroad, ran from Owosso to the resort town of Petoskey over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Over 700 people had the oppurtunity to ride aboard the train. (Photo by J.R. Valderas)
