382671-1392376030-wideThe Canadian government has decided to cut it’s passenger service subsidy to Canadian National Railway (CN) for the section between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst known as the Algoma Central Railway(ACR.) As a result CN will no longer run the passenger train along this historical and economic route beginning April 29, 2014.

An online petition has been started in hopes of changing CN and the Canadian government’s decision.

All Aboard! To save ACR Passenger Train

AC_LogoThe Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT) announces  All Aboard! To save ACR Passenger Train. This is a series of 3 Town Hall Meetings/ Media Events with a train trip on the ACR between the Wawa and Hearst meetings.

Guest speaker, Harry Gow, transportation expert and founding president of Transport Action Canada, will be able to enlighten us about efforts elsewhere in the country to stop rail cuts.

The three meeting event will take place as follows:

  • Sault Ste. Marie Town Hall Meeting: Wed. Feb. 19, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Civic Centre
  • Wawa Town Hall Meeting:                 Thurs. Feb. 20 at 10:00 am in the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre
  • Hearst Town Hall Meeting:                Thurs. Feb. 20 at 8:00 pm in the Companion Hotel

Following the Sault Ste. Marie meeting, the next morning (Thursday) the guest speaker and CAPT supporters will drive to Wawa.  Following the Wawa meeting a delegation will have lunch at the Big Bear Restaurant in Hawk Junction and board the train to Hearst for the 8:00 pm meeting there. On the morning of Friday, Feb. 21 the delegation will return by train.  All are invited to join us for any of the meetings and for the train trips on the 20th and 21st.  We extend a particular invitation to the media to be present for this series of meetings and train trips.

The town hall meetings will provide an opportunity for the public to express their concerns about the devastating effects that the announced termination of the ACR passenger train service will have on the region’s tourism, on local businesses, on population retention, on the future of transportation in our region, on the environment, on people’s access to regional health care and postsecondary institutions to name only a few.

All Aboard! To save the ACR Passenger Train provides a perfect opportunity for the media to hear the full extent of the impacts that this decision will have on our region and to hear the evidence that the decision was made with clearly false information about supposed alternative transportation to the areas serviced by the ACR.

More about the cancellation of passenger service on the Algoma Central Railway

AC_LogoThe following are resources for people concerned about the recent announcement of the cancellation of passenger service in Canada.

National Association of Railroad Passenger (NARP) Vice Chairman John DeLora has been monitoring news about the recently announced cancellation of passenger rail service between Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and Hearse Ontario. NARP had sent the Canadian ambassador a letter protesting the cancellation. Here’s DeLora’s round-up of related Canadian news:

Canada MOT cuts threaten all of VIA. A poll has shown that Canadian passenger train service has shrunk so far that the public no longer supports VIA continuing as a Crown Corporation.

CAPT and the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce (Ontario) seem to be spearheading the effort to at least stave off the March 30 termination of passenger service. They are asking that letters of support be sent to Bryan Hayes (bryan.hayes@parl.gc.ca) and Carol Hughs (carol.hughes@parl.gc.ca), both Members of Parliament from affected areas along the route.

CAPT will be holding 3 town hall meetings about the ACR passenger service issue on the following dates:

  • •Sault Ste Marie: Feb. 19 at 7:30 pm
  • •Wawa: Feb. 20 at 10 am
  • •Hearst: Feb. 20 at 8:00 pm (those of us travelling from the Sault will drive to Wawa for that meeting and then we’ll take the train from Hawk Junction to Hearst in the afternoon and return that way the next day).

Transport Action Canada has agreed to cover the costs of sending rail expert and founding president of Transport Action Canada Harry Gow to be a guest speaker at all 3 meetings. He is fluently bilingual so will be able to speak in French in Hearst and to the Francophone media.

Transport Canada announces end to Algoma Central Railway passenger service Mar. 31, 2014!

ACRhearst_routemapOn Friday, January 24, Hearst Mayor Roger Sigouin was informed by Canadian National Railways representatives that federal funding for passenger rail service from Sault Ste. Marie to Hearts was cut.

As a result, Algoma Central Railway passenger rail service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst will cease to exist as of Monday, March 31, 2014.

There are a number of properties, including privates cottages, hunting and fishing lodges and other tourist destinations, along that stretch that can only be accessed by rail.

The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT) is seeking assistance in having the decision to discontinue this rail service reversed and requests that public supporters assist by submitting letters of support to both Sault Ste. Marie MP Bryan Hayes (bryan.hayes@parl.gc.ca) and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes (carol.hughes@parl.gc.ca).

CAPT asks that any communication on this matter submitted to MPs Hayes and Hughes be copied to CAPT via info@captrains.ca

TAKE ACTION: Troy city council to decide the fate of the transit center Dec. 19

Midwest High-Speed RailTroy, Michigan, has been chosen for an $8.4 million federal grant that will fund 100% of a new Multi-Modal Transportation Facility. On December 19th, the City Council will vote on whether to keep or reject these funds. Make your voice heard by asking the City Council to keep the grant – and the jobs and private investment that come with it.

The proposed transportation facility will bring economic development, jobs, environmental, and mobility benefits to the local community. It will service both SMART buses and improved passenger rail along the Chicago-to-Pontiac route, which is slated to reach 110 mph capability in the near future. The federal grant will cover all of the project’s estimated design and construction costs, and the City is protected from cost overruns through an agreement with the construction manager.

A similar federally funded project in Normal, Illinois, resulted in 375 jobs and $200 million in private investment, including a new hotel and conference center near the station. It is also projected that nearby property values will rise. Neither the City of Troy or the State of Michigan can afford to lose federal investments and the jobs that come with them.

Please urge the City Council to support keeping the federal grant and building the new station.
