Extreme winter weather the first week of January 2014 cancelled hundreds of flights and slowed the highways to a crawl,  however, Amtrak passenger train service in Michigan experienced relatively few problems.

WLS-TV, the ABC affiliate in Chicago, reported that Wolverine train no. 353 was stuck in the snow on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014 near Kalamazoo. The train eventually made it to Chicago eight hours behind schedule.

Because of slow weather conditions in Illinois, some train equipment did not return to Chicago in time to meet schedules causing Amtrak to cancel Wolverine trains 352 and 353, Pere Marquette train no. 371 and Blue Water train 364 on Monday, Jan. 6. Amtrak offered motor coach buses to ticketed passengers to make their connections.
